The island, covered with coconut palms and dense bush, can be seen from the Muzhappilangad beach, from which permitted people can walk out to the island during low tide. Dharmadam, known earlier as Dharmapattanam. In 1998, the Kerala Government took over this land for tourism development. Dharmadam is located 4 km from the town of Thalassery.
